Weather, Software, and Safety - NDDOT's Software Innovation for Traveler Information

Nationally, approximately 21% of all crashes are weather related. NDDOT has developed and implemented new technology to better warn drivers of hazardous conditions at regional and local levels.

Using the automation functions in the newly deployed IRIS software, the National Weather Service database is polled for weather-related alerts, and weather sensors around the state are continually monitored. Messages are automatically generated and displayed on roadside signs to warn of blizzards, tornadoes, high winds, low visibility, and more. Better informed drivers can take proper precautions and make better decisions about when and where to travel.
