Construction Over Deep Compressible Soils (Twin Ports Interchange Ground Improvements)

The Twin Ports Interchange ground improvement in Duluth is the largest and most complex ground improvement project undertaken by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. In response to complex ground conditions and project constraints, the team at Barr Engineering Co. used advanced 3D numerical modeling to design and integrate a column-supported ground improvement system within the heart of the new interchange. The resulting design mitigates large settlements and lateral deformations in support of new lower-maintenance earthen embankments and retaining walls.
