Monitoring and Mitigating Wildlife Vehicle Collisions
- Presentation

- 02:00 PM
Wildlife-vehicle collisions are a major public safety concern and can pose challenges for wildlife conservation. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration estimates that one to two million collisions involving wildlife occur annually, resulting in more than 26,000 human injuries, 200 human fatalities, and more than $8 billion in damage each year. While wildlife vehicle collisions average about 5% of all crashes nationally, approximately 18% of all crashes in North Dakota involve wildlife. As result, NDDOT has partnered with UND and the Wildlife Connectivity Institute to evaluate methods for monitoring and developing mitigation strategies to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes in North Dakota.
