Leveraging Non-Traditional Crash Factors to Predict Future Fatal and Life Changing Crashes

  • Presentation
  • Prairie Rose Room 101/102
  • 10:30 AM
  • Ben Pierce

Presenters will explore an innovative project that utilizes big data and sophisticated statistical methods to proactively identify high-risk crash locations. This information will allow traffic safety practitioners to develop and implement safety strategies to address identified risk factors. They will showcase the project's development, which transitioned from a pilot using machine learning for highway crash prediction to the ongoing phase incorporating local roads, diverse data sources, and negative binomial regression and Bayesian network model for actionable interventions. They will address challenges encountered with data quality and availability, highlighting the project's potential to transform traffic safety strategies that will help accomplish Vision Zero.
